This week's thought provoking questions come from the fabulous Dani Jace.

What is the most unusual thing you’ve ever done in the name of research for a book?

I signed up for an adult dating site. I wanted to interact with people looking for a "hook-up". When people contacted me, I varied between being up front (letting them know i was researching) and pretending to look for commitment free sex. I found that if I was upfront, I tended to get extremely outrageous answers. Those wanting to 'date' me were a little more tame. I expect that the truth fell somewhere between the two camps. What shocked me most was the number of men out there with foot fetishes.

Name a nonfiction book you’ve read for research that you wouldn’t have read otherwise. Not including writing craft books.

When I was focusing on writing erotica, I decided I needed to read something different. I chose "Secrets of Porn Star Sex." Brutal, awful book. But i did get a few laughs. Frankly, it read more like a work of fiction than non-fiction.

If you could travel anywhere to do research for a book, including back in time, where would you go?

I would love to visit the future, just to see if it was post-apocalyptic, post-zombie or normal. I am curious as to how much personal interaction there is, or if the current trend towards less contact and more technology continues. I would also like to see what types of faster-than-light travel have been invented. (Yes, I'm a Star Trek Geek.)

Barring that, I would love to spend some time in the old west. Mmm, cowboys. I don't think I would like to live and work as hard as people did back then, but the time period does fascinate me.

Or maybe just to Trafalgar Square ... any time period. Such an interesting, inspirational place.

  1. Very entertaining, Katie!!! I once had a man come up to me in the supermarket and tell me I had pretty toes, LOL. Believe me my kids still tease me about that one. It shocked me but I'm not surprised about the foot fetishes :)

    1. I hear you! The foot fetish thing surprised me at first, but over time I've noticed how many men look intensely at women's feet. For them, sandal season is a blast. I don't get it. But whatever floats your boat!

  2. I once worked at a radio station where ALL the hetero men exchanged photos of women in high heels. I think they called themselves the Spikes Club.

    1. This is funny. Men are weird, weird animals. I think that's why we like them.

    1. This was not your average dating site. It was totally geared towards sexual hookups. Not my thing, but it was educational.

    1. I've done an informal pole (asked a bunch of guys I know) and it is surprising how many of them are into well manicured feet and toe rings. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go put my runners on!

  8. You might just win the prize for most outrageous research. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that! I love Trafalgar Square. One of the most intriguing places I've ever been.

    1. Gemma, I met (figuratively speaking) the most outrageous people. Couples looking to swing, single women who were bi-curious. Transgenders, bi-genders, Cheaters, widows and widowers. The list is endless. Their stories were diverse and occassoinally shocking.
